Verdict

Which one to choose

Fivetran is the established name in managed ingestion, with 700+ prebuilt connectors and a bill metered per row on each connection. Weld does the same job with 300+ connectors built in house, and puts transformations, orchestration, lineage and reverse ETL in the same product, on a flat monthly tier.

Choose Fivetran if you rely on connectors only Fivetran has, or your pipelines have to run inside your own network, which Fivetran offers as Hybrid Deployment on its Enterprise plan. Choose Weld if your Fivetran bill grows faster than your data, or you pay for ingestion, reverse ETL and dbt as separate products.

Where Fivetran is strong

  • 700+ prebuilt connectors
  • A free plan up to 500,000 rows a month
  • Hybrid Deployment, which processes data inside your network (Enterprise plan)
  • A Business Critical plan for highly sensitive data

Where Weld is strong

  • $959 a month against $5,200 on the same setup: 10 sources, 10 million rows a month, hourly syncs and 1 reverse ETL destination
  • Reverse ETL included, where Fivetran bills Activations on a meter of their own
  • A native AI agent, where Fivetran's dbt Wizard is in preview
  • Free migration that keeps your Fivetran schemas and table names, so dbt models keep running

How Weld and Fivetran compare in practice

What each tool is

Weld. Weld is a data pipeline and activation platform built for teams that need reliable ingestion, dbt-powered transformations, and data for AI agents and applications. Its Connect API gives agents and applications programmatic access to data pipelines. With 300+ in-house-built connectors, first-class dbt Core and dbt Cloud support, and near real-time syncs, Weld lets teams move data from any source into their cloud data warehouse and activate it back into business tools.

Fivetran. Fivetran is a well-established ELT tool focused on automating data ingestion through prebuilt connectors. It supports transformation orchestration and reverse ETL via its acquisition of Census. While it’s widely used in enterprise settings, its reliance on SQL-based workflows and external tools can increase complexity and cost for teams without dedicated data engineering resources.

Ease of use

Weld. Weld’s interface is built for clarity and speed, enabling users with varying levels of technical experience to manage data pipelines and models efficiently. Its built-in lineage and orchestration tools provide transparency across workflows.

Fivetran. Fivetran simplifies initial ingestion setup, but configuration and transformation workflows depend heavily on SQL and dbt. Teams without this experience may face a steeper learning curve.

Pricing

Weld. Weld offers a simple and predictable pricing model starting at $99 for 5 million active rows. This flat, MAR-based structure makes budgeting straightforward for small and medium-sized teams.

Fivetran. Fivetran’s MAR-based pricing model makes it difficult to predict costs, especially for teams with growing or unpredictable data volumes.

Features

Weld. Weld provides ELT ingestion, dbt-powered transformations, reverse ETL activation, data lineage, orchestration, and workflow management in a single platform. A native AI agent is built in, and an MCP server and the Connect API let AI agents and applications access and orchestrate data programmatically.

Fivetran. Fivetran includes ELT, dbt-based transformations, and reverse ETL via Census. It provides orchestration for dbt and other tools, an MCP server, a REST API and a Terraform provider for infrastructure automation, but does not include built-in data lineage, and ingestion, reverse ETL and transformation remain separate products.

Flexibility

Weld. Users can model data using dbt or SQL, automate workflows via the Connect API, and build custom connectors to any API. This provides strong flexibility for teams that want to tailor integrations and enable agent-driven data workflows within one platform.

Fivetran. While programmatic and infrastructure-based extensibility is supported, the platform lacks low-code or guided transformation features, limiting accessibility for non-engineering teams.

Moving off Fivetran?

Migration is free. Our team rebuilds your connectors with the same schemas and table names, runs both stacks in parallel, and you cut over once the row counts match, so your dbt models keep running.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Fivetran and Weld?

Both move data from your sources into a cloud warehouse. Fivetran focuses on ingestion, with 700+ prebuilt connectors, and sells reverse ETL as a separate product, Fivetran Activations, formerly Census. Weld has 300+ connectors built in house and includes transformations, orchestration, lineage and reverse ETL in the same product. Fivetran bills each connection per monthly active row; Weld sells flat monthly tiers.

Is Weld cheaper than Fivetran?

For most teams past the free plan, yes, because the pricing models differ. With 10 sources, 10 million rows a month, hourly syncs and 1 reverse ETL destination, Fivetran's Standard plan comes to about $5,200 a month and Weld to $959 on its Premium tier. Fivetran meters each connection per row and bills reverse ETL on top; Weld's tier includes them. At very low volumes Fivetran's free plan can cost less than any paid tier.

Does Fivetran have a free plan?

Yes. Fivetran's free plan covers 500,000 monthly active rows for connections, 3,500 for activations and 5,000 model runs a month. Weld has no free plan; every Weld plan starts with a 14-day free trial, and paid plans start at $99 a month.

Can I self-host Fivetran?

Not fully. Fivetran's Hybrid Deployment, on its Enterprise plan, runs an agent in your own network that processes the data, while configuration and scheduling stay in Fivetran's cloud. Weld runs as a managed cloud service only.

Does Fivetran include reverse ETL?

Fivetran sells reverse ETL as Activations, the former Census, which it acquired in 2025. Activations are billed on their own monthly active row meter, separate from connections. In Weld, reverse ETL is part of the same product and the same bill.

Can I migrate from Fivetran to Weld?

Yes, and our team does the work at no cost. Weld is reverse compatible with existing Fivetran destination schemas, so the dbt models, dashboards and reports built on top of them keep working. We recreate your connectors and transformations, run both stacks in parallel, and you cut over once the row counts and metrics reconcile.

Does Weld have as many connectors as Fivetran?

No. Fivetran publishes 700+ connectors, Weld has 300+, all built and maintained in house. The count matters less than the coverage, so the practical check is whether the sources you replicate today are on the list. If one is missing you can build it against any API with Weld's custom connector support.
